Von den 1950er bis zu den 1970er Jahren wurde nur eine geringe Menge an Kunststoffen produziert, so dass die Kunststoffabf\u00e4lle relativ \u00fcberschaubar waren. Zwischen den 1970er und den 1990er Jahren hat sich das Aufkommen von Kunststoffabf\u00e4llen jedoch mehr als verdreifacht, was einen \u00e4hnlichen Anstieg der Kunststoffproduktion widerspiegelt. In den fr\u00fchen 2000er Jahren stieg die Menge der von uns erzeugten Kunststoffabf\u00e4lle in einem einzigen Jahrzehnt st\u00e4rker an als in den 40 Jahren zuvor. Heute produzieren wir jedes Jahr etwa 400 Millionen Tonnen Kunststoffabf\u00e4lle. Etwa 36 Prozent aller produzierten Kunststoffe werden f\u00fcr Verpackungen verwendet, darunter auch Einwegplastikprodukte f\u00fcr Lebensmittel- und Getr\u00e4nkeverpackungen, von denen etwa 85 Prozent auf M\u00fclldeponien oder als unkontrollierter Abfall landen. Trotz der derzeitigen Bem\u00fchungen befinden sich derzeit sch\u00e4tzungsweise 75 bis 199 Millionen Tonnen Plastik in unseren Ozeanen.<\/p>\n
